Fast circuits and faster cars combine with deep, challenging gameplay to make Microsoft's Project Gotham Racing II one of the most exciting Xbox experiences to date. With over 100 different types of vehicle, including SUVs, compact cars and even Porsches and Ferraris, PGR creates an experience that is both engaging and exciting. It has the spirit of "just one more go" like little else. In offline mode, players compete for Kudos points, taking part in time trials, road races and a variety of high-speed challenges that allow them to unlock new cars and circuits from the many on offer. These unlocked treats can then be played single player or taken online and raced with competitors over the Xbox Live system. It's almost bewildering to race around the tight streets of Italy in a Mini Cooper then take over the wheel of some ludicrously overpowered American muscle car and attempt to keep it in a straight line as the power to the back wheels constantly forces it to fishtail out of control. Full credit must go to programmers Bizarre Creations for not only furnishing the game with a broad range of vehicles but also making each one feel so very different--changing car classes can be quite a challenge. With locations around the world (Australia, Russia, Spain and even Edinburgh featuring strongly), the graphical look of the game is lush and a real treat for the eyes. Birds soar lazily over the racetracks, there's no popup to speak of and in Yokohama even the big wheel in the distant fairground is fully animated--though at the speed this games moves along it's unlikely you'll have time to check it out. Take PGR2 online and the fun really begins--there's simply nothing like blasting through the tyre smoke of a multi-car pile-up and taunting the opposition as you roar into the distance. Pages could be written about how engaging, absorbing, deep and exciting this game is but it's enough to say it's destined to be a massive hit. It's a must for petrol-heads everywhere. --Chris Russell

Enclave is an exhilarating but difficult first-person role-playing game--a gritty, up-close-and-personal Diablo meets Halo experience. The basic action of the game takes place in a dark and chaotic landscape ripped apart by the "rift"--a bottomless crevasse magically created to surround the lone city of Celenheim, and keep it protected from the dark Outlanders preparing to invade. Your first mission, the Mission of Light, will be to make sure that the Outlanders do not succeed in their attempts. As a very fun side note, when you win the game for Celenheim, you can turn around and play the game as an Outlander. You start the game as a knight and as the levels progress, you acquire various other characters that play pivotal roles in your ability to get through each level alive. In true Dungeons and Dragons style, you prep for each level by gearing up your character and purchasing the items you think will help you stay alive. Character selection is very important since each mission has unique challenges, tends to be pretty long and is usually impossible to save in progress. This brings me to the game's only major downfall--unless you are a patient and skilled gamer, there's a good possibility that you will get frustrated by not being able to get past difficult levels within a try or two. Many of the levels need to be attempted half a dozen times or more using different character and equipment combinations to get through. It's an enjoyable challenge, but may be too much like hard work for everyone. --Sung Nicholas Kim

The promotional blurb for Codemasters' latest racing game, TOCA Race Driver 2, makes an awful lot out of the in-game cinematics, the wealth of game options and the fancy new damage engine. However, what is also crucial to the game's success is this: TOCA Race Driver 2 plays like a dream. It follows the narrative-based approach of its predecessor, as you become a genuine character in the game. That takes you from the early races where you attempt to make your name, through to the big championships where you then have to prove it. There are plenty of championships to take on, too, and as with the wide selection of vehicles waiting to be driven, these are gradually unlocked as you make progress.Even in single-player mode, though, the races are genuinely immersive and wildly entertaining. Sure, the game punishes your mistakes, but that's as it should be, and it rarely leaves you at the point where you don't want to have another go after a winning position has gone horrendously wrong. Fortunately, the AI of the computer-controlled cars is pretty much spot on too--they make mistakes, they adopt different driving styles, and only on occasions betray their non-human status. Online, the game is even better. Twelve players at a time can compete and it's here where the TOCA Race Driver 2 is at its most exhilarating. And then there are the production values. From the stunningly realised cars and courses, through to the tightly woven voiceovers and gloriously cinema-like action replays, it barely puts a foot wrong. Not only then is the game a joy to play, it's also a joy to look at. The only minor niggle is that those who bought the previous game may have wanted a little bit more from the sequel, but that's not likely to stop them enjoying it. TOCA Race Driver 2 is an action-packed, compulsive and long-lasting racing game that's very unlikely to disappoint. --Simon Brew
