I purchased this camera just over a year ago and I am in love with it. I was just starting out with photography, and this camera made it very easy and less confusing. The pre-set settings (Portrait, Landscape, etc.) take such great pictures that it was only until recently that I even bothered to learn how to use the manual setting. Before purchasing the D5000, I had used the Nikon D3000. The D5000 has a much better screen, and in my opinion has a better design. The other great thing about the D5000 is that it has video. The screen flips down and you can take videos at a decent quality. The quality is not as good as the photos, but it is better than having no video at all. The 18-55mm lens is also great. It is perfect for taking photos at a normal length away from people, and it takes very nice landscape shots. I also have the 55-200mm lens and I suggest purchasing that at some point as well if you plan on taking photos of subjects that are farther away. All in all, the Nikon D5000 is a great camera, especially if you are new to the world of photography or SLR cameras.
