One of two new Zelda games for the Game Boy Color, Oracle o
... Read more
One of two new Zelda games for the Game Boy Color, Oracle of Seasons is the more action-focused of the duo. The Triforce has alerted Link to trouble in the land of Holodrum, where the General of Darkness has kidnapped Din, the Oracle of Seasons. The villain hopes to transform Holodrum into a wasteland by changing the order of the seasons. It's up to you to help Link save Holodrum by rescuing Din... The game features more combat and less puzzle-solving than its sister title, Zelda: Oracle of Ages. Its mechanics and menus are similar to those found in the original Zelda Game Boy game--this is classic overhead role-playing at its best. The key item in this game is the Rod of Seasons, which allows Link to change seasons at will. For example, an impassable lake becomes a quick pathway to stroll by using the rod to change seasons from summer to winter. Although this game is extremely enjoyable on its own, you'll want to use it in conjunction with Oracle of Ages. After you complete one game you'll be given a password that can be used in the other to enable you to begin with all your items, statistics and progress intact. Certain characters will appear only when you play both games, and by using a link cable, players can trade items. Game Boy Advance users will find a store that's exclusive to them. This is one of the best Game Boy titles ever, though it may not appeal to younger players or those looking for an undemanding game. --Raymond M Padilla, Amazon.com

A 3-D action/adventure game starring everyone's favourite web-head, Spider-Man is quite a rarity--a superhero videogame that doesn't suck. Featuring an original story jam-packed with characters and locations from the comics, and, more importantly, gameplay that does our hero justice, this is one title that won't disappoint Spidey-fans.While Spider-Man's storyline (told via a slide-show of comic book panels) is linear, there's great freedom of movement within the game's 3-D indoor and outdoor environments. True to comic book form, you can climb walls and travel about web swinging, although the former can be disorientating in terms of point-of-view, and the latter is often a leap of faith, since the game's shoddy graphics create a restricted field of vision. In addition to being able to do all sort of nifty-things with your web-spinners, Spidey's super-strength, super-agility and Spider-Sense (for which you will want a Rumble Pak to feel the patented tingle) are also accounted for. As for his super-human reflexes, well, that one's really up to you. --Joe Hon

Winnie the Pooh has enjoyed a surprise resurgence in popula
... Read more
Winnie the Pooh has enjoyed a surprise resurgence in popularity lately--and thus it should come as no surprise that this quaint Game Boy Color release has emerged as a sleeper hit for the handheld system. Everybody loves Winnie the Pooh--and the masterminds behind this game know it. Pooh is packed with games aimed mostly at younger players. Players start by picking from one of seven characters including Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit and Piglet. Start in your character's house and explore a huge world, complete with hidden paths. Along the road, you'll encounter friends who will give you cards, which you can use when playing board games. Other cards, like the seedling card, can be planted and nourished with watering can cards. Besides games such as catching acorns and exercising, characters will face adventures, such as Pooh rescuing Piglet from a waterfall. The completed adventures then become part of players' storybooks to be relived again. The games are simplistic and usually a matter of moving from space to space, but it all adds up to an entertaining package, especially for young children. But we won't tell anyone if you are a bit older. --Robb Guido Pros: fun cast of characters games are simple yet fun Cons: older children will tire of its elementary nature

Featuring two video game heavies of the early 1980s, Arcade Hits: Joust/Defender is sure to appeal to nostalgic video game veterans as well as those that have no idea what a "Gorf" is. Because arcade games of that era had limited graphics and sound capabilities, both titles translate very well to the Game Boy Color system, and the gameplay is just as addictive now as it was then. In Joust, the name of the game is survival of the fittest: riding atop a flying ostrich with lance in hand, your knight must eliminate wave after wave of enemy knights in a 2-D arena of floating platforms and lava pits. Two players can joust simultaneously via a link cable to another Game Boy with a second copy of the game. (Believe us, it's worth the trouble!) Defender has you piloting a spaceship across a horizontally side-scrolling landscape, where alien invaders are snatching up people from the surface. It's your job to save your fellow citizens and destroy endless sorties of alien ships. With humans being highly susceptible to laser fire and falls from high altitudes, Defender calls for precise handling over an itchy trigger finger. --Joe Hon Pros: Excellent translation of arcade classics Highly-addictive gameplay 2-player simultaneous play via a link cable Cons: Downright ugly if played on a non-Game Boy Color system
