Combining first and third-person shooter action with the cerebral story-telling of the likes of Deus Ex, Project Eden is a deep and entertaining sci-fi romp for the PlayStation 2. Set on a future Earth crippled by overcrowding, the mood is dark and seamy. The game is seen through the eyes of a four-person police squad whose aim is to keep everything running smoothly and in an orderly fashion. Happily for us this is far from the case and the plot develops confidently through a serious of twists and turns to reveal a conspiracy which threatens the world (for a change). The beauty of Project Eden comes from the fact that the team members must be used in conjunction with one another to defeat the challenging in-game puzzles. It's simply not possible to blunder through the game on a Doom-esque rampage, murdering everything in sight. Much more finesse is required to overcome the obstacles in your path and a degree of patience and lateral thinking help immeasurably for some of the tricky situations you'll find yourself dumped in. If there's one complaint about what is otherwise a great game, it's the control system. Getting to grips with character and camera movement is a tricky business and can be more than a little confusing. Stick with it, however, and what you have is a great action-adventure escapade. --Chris Russell

A guerrilla war is raging on Taro-469 between the human-owned Ecco Corporation and the ruthless alien Naz'Ha over the Lazari crystals, a unique and powerful energy source that only seems to be found on Taro-469. The Naz'Ha invaded the former corporate colony, massacring the colonists. With the their superior technology powered by the Lazari crystal, the Naz'Ha have annihilated four waves of Ecco's retaliatory attacks over the past six months. It was only after Ecco was able to capture a Naz'Ha vehicle that the corporation's scientists were able to unlock the secrets of utilising the energy source and thereby meet the aliens on an equal playing field. Players will battle an alien race in a war for a newly discovered and immensely powerful crystal energy resource. The player will control "The Aggressor" a transforming hover vehicle that can be upgraded by collecting alien technology crystals. Players will also be able to take command of the mothership's gun turrets. During the game missions, the player will be able to issue commands to his wingman. The wingman can be used to attack specific targets or to unleash a super attack. With both wheeled and hover modes the Aggressor vehicle gives the player realistic multi-mode physics and strategic choice for vehicular combat. Issue commands to your wingman for aerial cover, attack support, and delivery of super attacks. Battle enemies using the turrets of the Monolith mobile base. Earn numerous vehicle upgrades by collecting alien Nano-techs dispersed in levels throughout the game. Explosive vehicle combat action. Fight and destroy squadrons of enemy vehicles as well as colossal bosses. Battles are jam-packed with explosions and flying missiles.

Max Payne's wife and baby daughter were slain by junkies hopped up on a dangerous new synthetic drug. For three years, Max has worked undercover to find the source of these drugs and then, just when he's almost got it figured out, somebody ices his superior and pins the murder on him. Now, it's payback time as Max faces off against the Mob, the police and much, much, worse. Max Payne has jumped from the PC to the PlayStation 2, and there's going to be hell to pay. Max Payne uses extremely realistic graphics to showcase a gritty film noir-inspired New York City. Payne stalks subways, tenements, nightclubs and even government installations as he takes his vengeance out on a horde of gun-toting bad guys. Taking a page from the visual style of famed director John Woo, as well as The Matrix, Max Payne lets the player launch into a slow motion mode generally known as "Bullet Time", which makes dodging enemy fire and dishing out your own in return, while leaping side to side, a breeze. While this looks extremely cool to do, it also evens the odds and can only be used for limited amounts of time, making it a strategic as well as aesthetic option. And speaking of aesthetics, the game is packed with exciting moments, weapons and locations, even if the enemies get a little redundant after a while. The level design ranges from inspired (a multi-level parking garage) to humdrum (a warehouse) and several levels actually take place in the twisted wonderland of the hero's warped psyche. The graphics are state of the art, though admittedly the PlayStation 2 doesn't have the power to render them as well as the Xbox or PC, but most people won't notice the difference. The introduction scenes are painted photos presented graphic-novel style, which is a stylistic choice that pays dividends, even if the writing is hilariously bad and the voice acting is, if possible, even worse. Needless to say, all this is violent, disturbing and not at all for the kids. Pay attention to the 18 rating, it's not there for decoration.--Bob Andrews

In a nutshell:It may seem as if this has missed the boat on topical tie-ins but with so few games offering up a virtual game of cops ‘n’ robbers this is a surprisingly fresh take on the whole action genre. The lowdown:Trying to make a game out of a fourteen year old movie that consists primarily of men in suits standing around shouting at each other is not the most obvious of concepts, but as the most important crime movie of the last twenty years Reservoir Dogs proves to have great potential as a video game. As you can imagine most of the game involves sequences only hinted at in the movie as you actually take part in the diamond store heist, escape the police, abduct Marvin the luckless cop and stash the diamonds as Mr Pink. The game rates how you play on a moral scale, giving you full freedom to take hostages, torture and kill - or play the nice guy and try not to get anyone hurt. Most exciting moment:Just like the movie the game is filled with flashbacks and scenes that happen out of chronological order. Amidst the fairly generic driving missions the best bits by far are the third person combat sequences where, if you decide to play nasty, you can unleash a “bullet festival” special move when your adrenaline maxes out.Since you ask:Despite concerns over the game’s violence before its release, Eidos have pointed out that it’s actually possible (if quite difficult) to play through and win the entire game without killing anyone. The bottom line:A clever use of an unusual license, that’s more hits than misses.HARRISON DENT
