During July 1940, 15 Italian pilots arrived for intensive training on the JU87 at the Luftwaffe Stuka training school in Graz, Austria with a similar number arriving the following month. The first batch of JU87s supplied were from existing Luftwaffe units so Italian emblems and insignia were painted over the original German markings. To further personalise their aircraft the Stuka was re-named Picchiatello by the Italian crews. Initially equipping 96 Gruppo based in Sicily, the Regia Aeronautica was the first air arm to use the JU87 in the Mediterranean Theatre. 101 Gruppo was originally based in Tirana, Albania and used their JU87s during the Balkans campaign before the unit transferred to Sicily. The JU87R-2 modelled is from 208a Squadriglia, 101 Gruppo as flown by Capitano Raul Zucconi while based at Sicily in June 1941, from where operations were carried out against targets in Malta and on Allied shipping. Erwin Grschow, Sept 1940 On 11th September 1940, Feldwebel Hermann Brinkmann and his Bordfunker Uffz. Erwin Gr'schow of 2 Staffel, ZG26 were assigned as bomber escort for an attack on London. On attempting to start their Bf110 C-3 neither engine would fire and the crew quickly ran to a spare, a very early and somewhat war weary C-1, U8+HL, of 3 Staffel, ZG26. The mission proceeded and after a ferocious battle with RAF squadrons over the south east of England the Bf110s retreated to the south to await the return of the bombers. During this manoevre one of Brinkmanns engines seized up and he had to break formation. Despite diving low and heading for France he was spotted and attacked by RAF fighters. With hits to his other engine Brinkmann had no choice but to put down his stricken aircraft. U8+HL belly landed at Cobham Farm, Charing. Both crew members survived and were taken as POWs. By the end of the action the Luftwaffe had lost 25 aircraft (5 Bf110Cs from ZG26) with 60 aircrew killed or captured, whilst the RAF lost 29 fighters with 17 pilots killed. Minimize

The squadron grew rapidly and was soon a major part of Britains Harrier force, and was a key part of NATO in defending Germany against Soviet aggression. On 4th January 1977 the Sqn moved to RAF Gutersloh but has also been active in other places, with its aircraft being deployed to Belize and the Falkland Islands after the conflict. The GR3 aircraft modelled carries a special commemorative tailfin, with a stylised version of 4 Sqns crest applied to the tailfin. 4 Sqn remains at the forefront of RAF Harrier operations to this day, currently operating the GR7/9 as part of Joint Force Harrier.
