HP OmniBook XE2 a Serious Contender

Author's Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: 1. The unit came with a restore CD, so that you could restore the unit to factory new condition (software only). 2. Everything is built in, you can use the Floppy and DVD drives at the same time. 3. Online diagnostics software - to help troubleshoot issues

Cons: 1. The only docking solution for this is a port replicator. 2. Everything is built in, you cannot add a second battery or hard drive instead of another device (no multibay). 3. There is no matching keyboard or mouse to go with it. 4. It can only be upgrade

Ease of Use: 4
Quality of Tech Support: 4

The HP OmniBook XE2 that we purchased had a Pentium II - 400MHz processor.
128MB RAM, 4X DVD drive, 6.0GB hard drive, 14.1" 1024x768 XGA TGT display with 65K colors.

The Floppy and DVD drives are both built into the unit and usable at the same time. It comes with a built in 56K V.90 modem and a Touchpad pointing device. The DVD/CDROM drive can be used to play music CD's while the computer is turned off (controlled by external buttons). The battery life on it was unexpectedly long, we were able to use the unit for over 4 hours on a single charge (it did some MS Word documents, worked on an MS Access database, ran 3 MS PowerPoint presentations and watched a DVD movie. The display is crisp and clear and the sound system and speakers on it are incredible for a laptop, 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro–compatible stereo sound, Dual built-in speakers with acoustic chamber, 3D-enhanced PCI bus audio, Dolby Pro Logic with Surround sound. AGP Graphics, 64-bit Video Graphics Adapter, Dual-display capability, 4 MB of embedded video RAM, Support for software MPEG-2 and Zoomed Video.

The software that is preloaded includes: MS Windows 98 Second Edition or WinNT 4.0, Adobe Acrobat reader 4.0, McAfee VirusScan, Internet Explorer 5, Quicklink 3 Fax software, HP user guides and HP Tools 4.1

Physical dimensions are: 12.25 × 9.8 × 1.65 in. and it weighs 7.0 lbs.

It comes with a 1-year parts and labor warranty with an optional 2 year extension.

This unit is great for everyone, from gamers to executives.
