I'm a student who uses the R40 as a piece of school equipment. My school uses only ThinkPads and the older grades haven't had any problems with theirs. However, mine, like so many others in my grade, has a serious issue with the motherboard which causes blurring of the screen. As well, it has a tendency to overheat, therefore burn the plastic keyboard.
However, the laptop does have a few redeeming points as well. The screen resolution is excellent, in the sense that there is no need to adjust it. As well, there are 2 USB ports which makes it handy to use multiple attachments. The R40 comes with a wireless card which allows me to connect to both my school and home networks easily
Overall, I am pleased with the machine in spite of this one major flaw
