Author's Review
I was stuck in a world of tapes. I never used to want to listen to CD's because they were more expensive and portable CD players were so big compared to tape walkmen. Well, my boyfriend bought me the Sony D-EJ725 CD Walkman for Christmas.
APPEARANCE
The look of this CD player is somewhat like a flying saucer. Mine has a silvery metallic colour, and an LCD display screen. The buttons are not awkwardly set like some other CD players I have seen. It is fairly light, and about 3/4 of an inch thick, but I wish it had some kind of hand strap or something on the back that you could just hook into.
WHAT YOU GET
In the box came the CD player, an AC adapter, headphones with a remote attached, and 2 reusable (rechargeable) AA batteries. You can actually
recharge the batteries up while they are in your player by simply plugging the unit in with the AC adapter and pressing the STOP button on the CD player. I find it SO useful! There is also an instruction manual included.
PLAYING THE CD
To open the CD player, there is a little sliding button that when you slide it to the right, it lid pops open. It seems a little bit flimsy, but I have not had any problems with it yet, and I use it quite often.
This CD player has many of the features you would see in a regular sized stereo. You can
program a playlist up to 24 songs long, as well as
pause, fast forward or rewind, and repeat. You can repeat either one song individually, or repeat the entire disc to play again once it has finished.
You can
program the player to just play one song at a time and then turn off, as well as
shuffle the songs to play in a random order.
When a CD is stopped and started up again, it
resumes its place, and starts up from where you last pressed the stop button. Many players do not have this function- it is extremely useful, and you don't have to start from the beginning of the CD every time.
The
volume button is placed on the side of the player, rather then the top, and goes up to 10, with each increment having 3 separate increments. So its almost like the volume actually goes up to 30.
There is also a
bass boost on the player. The bass boost has 3 separate levels and are displayed on the LCD screen as little bars. The bass boost definitly sucks up battery power, but with the recharable batteries that you get, you don't really have to worry about it, because you can just go home and plug in for a few hours!
The player has a
hold switch on it. What this switch does is, when is it activated, if you press a button on the CD player, nothing will happen. This option is good if you are jogging or holding the player while listening to it, that way if you accidentally press a button, you won't lose your place. The hold button is placed on the side of the player opposite of the volume buttons.
The
hold button is also featured on the remote. The remote is located on the wire that attaches to the headset. This is the main reason why I wanted this model of the player. More then likely
you will need a case to carry your player around in, and if you are like me, then you switch songs, and change the volume often. I used to have the model that did not have the remote with it, and every 2 minutes I was taking the player out and putting it back in. It is really annoying when you are trying to work out etc, because you have to keep stopping.
The remote has all the same buttons on it that the player does
except for the bass boost. The bass boost is only available on the CD player itself. Oh- and programming a playlist- you can only do that from the player as well.
With each press of a button,
the player goes beep-beep almost like a digital watch. This option can be turned off though, just like a digital watch as well. I guess it is just a feature- I like the beep-beep and leave it on.
The headphones it comes with are just o-k. I haven't bought new ones yet. You can also plug the player in and listen to it through your computer like I do at work! The AC adapter comes in handy not only for that, but also for charging the batteries.
The CD player is CDR/CDRW compatible, so you can listen to your homemade CD's as well as store bought CD's.
According to the box, and the salesman, this CD player supposedly gets
more hours of playback time then any other Sony CD player. It says the playback time is 72 hours! From what I have noticed, the batteries do last quite a long time without charging, but I have yet to test it to its maximum!
ANTI-SKIP (G PROTECTION)
This CD player has
40 second anti-skip protection. It has skipped on me once while I was jogging, but the player wasn't secured and was bouncing all over the place. Other than that, I have not had any problems at all with the player skipping. If you open the lid of the player, there is a little switch that allows you to
turn on or off the "G-Protection". Apparently turning it off will save battery life, but I highly *do not* recommend turning it off unless you are sitting still, because it will skip so easily. I'm not even sure why they gave the consumer a choice anyways!
SOUND
I feel that the sound is exceptional with this CD player. If you turn the bass boost up to full blast, it gets a little drowned out, but any lower then that, and the sound is really high quality to me. It also depends on the headphones you listen to, and the ones supplied are not the greatest. I bet if you used some really nice headphones, the sound would be even more amazing.
Sony also has a warranty of 90 days for labour, and one year for parts, so that is a little bit of reasurrance since I break things so easily!
WHAT'S MISSING?
One thing that this player does not have, is a radio! I miss my walkman because of this feature. Even though the radio plays crappy music anyways, its a nice feature to have just in case.
Also, back-lit LCD display screen would have looked ultra-cool, but might have increased the price quite a bit!
