Wario World for GameCube Image

Wario World for GameCube

Hes the good, the bad and the ugly all rolled into one. Marios archenemy, Wario, has previously starred in a string of hit Game Boy games -- most recently, Wario Land 4 for GBA -- and the gold-grubbin villain finally gets to be the hero in his first 3D console adventure.

Wario World is an awesome platfomer/fighter

Author's Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: A fun, quirky mix of fighting, platforming and puzzle solving

Cons: A little too short

The Bottom Line:
WarioWorld gives you fighting, platforming, and puzzlesolving, what more could any Wario fan ask for?

Author's Review
Y'know if this game had been released just a few years ago, I probably wouldn't care. Back in the days of the N64 and GBC, when the Wario Land games and Super Mario 64 were considered by most to be extremely awesome, I had been following the Sonic franchise at the time so I missed out on some Nintendo classics back when they were big (doesn't mean I still won't play a game of Super Mario World on my SNES when noone's looking). But then the unthinkable happened. Sega's Dreamcast console went under and Sega left the console markey for good. For about a year after I still lived on the DC until I decided to get an update. When the GBA came out the following summer, I got one, popped in WarioLand4 and loved it. A year later I got a Gamecube, not just for the Sonic related titles but also for the many Nintendo franchises. I LOVED Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Party 4 so when I heard about the new Wario game I had to have it. Ok. so basically, here's the actual review now...
Wario World is a wonderfully colorful game reminiscent of the gameplay from Super Mario 64 (which by the way I only played for less than 10 minutes) with a lot of the same. However don't think that means that the game is retro in appearance, it's not. While it follows somewhat the same format as the classic WarioLand platformers, WarioWorld brings a lot more to the table. Piledrivers, Swingadings and a whole lot more. When you see this game at first, in a commercial or on a demo it simply looks like a repitive and mindless fighting game. Well it is, but that doesn't mean it can't entertain you for a long time to come. Despite the fact that your foes are always about the same (they'll tweak the character models a little to fit the theme of the stage) and the way you dispose of them is the same as well, each stage, at the same time, provides unique challenges, obstacles and mini games. That's right, mini games. There is more to this game than simply fighting, although what you do with your defeated foes can help you move on. For example, some levels require you to grab a defeated enemy and swing it about wildly to turn a crank. It sounds dumb, I know but it's so satisfying sending your foes all over the place with a simple piledriver. Another thing about this game that's cool are the bosses. I've always loved bosses, the kind of bosses that weren't too easy but made you really use your skill to beat them, but at the same time not so insanely hard that you should smash your controller after losing many lives in a row (and unfortunately there are some like that). One thing I hate about this game is the fact that it's too short. You basically have only 8 different levels (the last stage in a world is a boss fight only) and the names for the worlds are TERRIBLE. Places like "Excitement Central" and "Thrillsville" could have anything in them. At least "Spooktastsic World" stays true to form but "Thrllsville" takes you into a frozen cavern and a giant beanstalk. Despite the short length in the game it may last you longer than you think. The 4th world alone kept me busy for days and if you want to unlock all the extras, you'll need to find all Wario's treasure, which requires some exploration and backtracking, and you need to find all the Wario statue pieces to get more health, which you'll sometimes win by completing the mini games, along with red diamonds which you need to access each level's boss battle. So basically it will last you longer than you think and it's still a great quirky game that keeps you entertained for hours.
